A Word From the Georgia QSO Party Coordinator, WA4ZXV:

Hello All;

Norm Schklar, WA4ZXV, here, I’m the new Georgia QSO Party Coordinator. I live in Norcross and I’m active in Gwinnett Amateur Radio Society (GARS), Southeastern DX Club (SEDXC), North Georgia QRP, SECC, QRP-ARCI and a lot of what goes on in North Georgia. Mike, N4ES, after several years of coordinating the GQP has asked for some relief, and I’m it. I’m coming in after a good 2011 where we had reported contacts with all 159 counties. Way to go GEORGIA!
Now, the challenge is to keep the momentum. And that’s where you come in. We need support from every club in the state. I’ll be visiting several cubs over the next few months, but needless to say there is just not enough time to visit all. And some are a good distance away. So I need you to be the GQP representative in your geographic area. I don’t say club, because there much more to the Armature Radio Community than the clubs. Sure, I’m a big believer in Amateur Radio clubs, but being realistic I know we’ll never get everyone that’s active in our hobby to join, so help spread the word in your community. We have some business card to hand out at club meetings as a reminder of the date. We also have a couple different brochures which are available from the web site. If you would like 50 or so cards to hand out at a meeting just send me your street address and I’ll send some.
It’s time to start identifying territories for ROVERS. We need several and we need them to cover a large geographic area. Last year we had 21 rovers that covered much of the state. With 159 counties, that’s a lot of mileage. QSOs ranged from 2900 down to 19, and they all helped make Georgia counties available for the GQP. If you are interested, or have friends that may be interested in roving, there’s information on the web site, or they can contact me directly. I’ve not been a rover, but I know folks that can help. Sounds like fun and I may try it this year. If an area overlaps, don’t worry. Better safe than sorry. I’ll try to keep the map on the web site up to date at least on a weekly bases.
Up here in Gwinnett County, our club found a county that seemed to need better representation and the last two years intruded on one of our members with a weekend home in Greene County to set up for the two days of the GQP. It’s better than an hour’s ride, so some of us spent the night. It was a true party! Set up 3 wire antennas, three stations, and cooked dinner on the grill and breakfast on the range. We even shared a little string music after closing down the stations for Saturday evening. We probably had 20 members involved and we all had a great time. And we’re going back this year!

The Georgia QSO Party is also a great place to begin practice for Field Day. It gives new operators a relatively calm working environment to experience the joys of contesting and get accustomed to some of the mannerisms of other operators. In many cases, it’s the first experience at HF radio. CW contacts reported ran from 2900 down to 1. The CW category also includes digital and RTTY. We don’t separate out the different modes, but what a great place to try your hand at digital in a contest.

Want to be a rover? Just pick some counties and get us a list. What county in order first day, second day. Ok to repeat the first day on the second day, or go out spend the night and reverse the second day. We’ll compile a list of who’s going where so folks know who to listen for. It’s ok to double up, just as long as you cover two or more counties. Want to announce which county or counties your club or group will be covering as portable or fixed? Just send us a note and we’ll get you listed. Learn more here!
